Beneath Paris, there’s an entire hidden network of tunnels that stretches for more than 300 kilometers, much of it off-limits to the public. While the official Paris Catacombs are a legal tourist site, large sections of the old underground quarry system remain closed and are regularly entered by illegal explorers known as cataphiles. The tunnels were originally created from limestone quarries that helped build much of Paris above ground. Over time, some parts were reinforced, mapped and monitored, while others were left as a maze of narrow passageways, flooded chambers, hidden rooms and unofficial gathering spots deep under the city. Cataphiles have been slipping into that underground system for decades through concealed entrances, maintenance access points and old quarry routes. Some go for the history, some for the thrill, and others for the strange underground culture that has grown there over the years, including murals, carved spaces and secret meetup areas. Entering those closed sections is illegal and can lead to fines, police intervention or getting lost in areas that are difficult to navigate without experience.
