Petit Palais Musée des Beaux-Arts de Paris, une institution municipale d’envergure internationale Le Petit Palais Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris niche avenue Winston Churchill, entre Champs Élysées et Invalides. Le bâtiment conçu à l’occasion de l’Exposition Universelle de 1900, à l’instar du Grand Palais et du pont Alexandre III a connu des réaménagements tout en conservant son opulence élégante. Le Petit Palais appartient au réseau des 14 établissements municipaux de Paris Musées dont les collections permanentes sont accessibles gratuitement. Les collections municipales, fruits de donations, legs et une politique d’acquisition ambitieuse, réunissent près de 47 000 oeuvres, peintures, sculptures, dessins, gravures, objets d’arts décoratifs, mobilier. Le corpus couvre une période étendue de l’Antiquité au XIXe siècle. Environ 1 300 pièces sont présentées en permanence. L’architecte Charles Girault (1851-1932), Grand Prix de Rome 1880, dresse les plans du Grand et du Petit Palais à l’occasion de l’Exposition Universelle de 1900. À la suite de cet évènement, le Petit Palais fait l’objet d’une réhabilitation. Des travaux menés de l’hiver 1901 au printemps 1902 permettent d’aménager l’édifice en Musée des Beaux-Arts de Paris. La bâtisse se déploie autour d’un jardin semi-circulaire et son péristyle en hémicycle. Les collections municipales s’enrichissent progressivement au rythme des legs, des donations et des acquisitions, le legs des frères Dutuit, 20 000 oeuvres, en particulier de l’école hollandaise, Rembrandt et Rubens, la donation Edward Tuck (1842-1938), des collections d’objets d’art français du XVIIIe siècle, une partie des collections personnelles d’Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), marchand d’art soutien des avant-gardes modernes.
